What is an Aquaponic system and how does it work?

The Growing Pagoda Aquaponic System from Born Again Gardens

Picture
This diagram show the system's layout and the potential growth of system by adding additional floating grow beds and horizontal planters. This system is called a C.H.O.P. system. (Constant Height One Pump) The fish tank's water level always stays at a constant level which helps in the fish's health. The water level is controlled by a stand pipe in the fish tank that only drains out water as it receives it.

Picture
A 50 gallon trash container in dug into the ground to create a sump where the water from the Bio-Reactor drains into the sump through the bell syphon. This is where the pump is located to pump the water from the sump into the floating grow beds which than flows back into the fish tank.
Picture
Swirl Separator (Removes large particulates) Water flows from the fish tank through the Swirl Separator to remove large fish waste and uneaten food before entering the Bio-Reactor (Grow Bed). A drain valve is installed under the separator to drain the particulates which is then used to water soil plants

Picture
The fish tank is a Rubbermaid 100 gallon container. The entire system holds at one time approximately 200 gallons of water at any given time.

It is very important that you have a net cover to prevent your fish from jumping out!

Stand alone Aquaponic Units by Born Again Gardens.

Additional Info
This self-contained unit will get you started  and introduce you to aquaponics using Goldfish or other aquarium fish. Goldfish are more forgiving and can withstand difference in temperatures. The Kids will  like feeding them. This is a flood and drain system that uses a  "Bell Syphon" which does not require any mechanical  device.

Picture
The planting bed is made up of pea gravel placed inside a bin. A hole is place in the center where the Bell Syphon is attached. A pipe is placed along the bed to distribute the water evenly from the pump in the fish tank below.

Water from the Bell Syphon enters the fish tank through a plastic pipe that has holes drilled above a cap. Air is allowed to enter at the top of the drain pipe which is sucked down the pipe causing air bubbles to form as it is forced through the small holes. This action aerates the water adding needed oxygen for the fish.
